Our Approach
Isshinryu karate is an extremely efficient style of karate. It was created by Master Tatsuo Shimabuku by combining what he considered the best of Shorin-ryu and Gojo-ryu karate. Because Isshinryu is a close in, no-wasted-motion style, it is easily adaptable to anyone. Our philosophy is to train you with the traditional Isshinryu knowledge, but help you apply that knowledge to real world self defense situations.
We practice hard. Plain and simple. The closer you can practice to the real world, the better prepared you will be. It is imperative to us that you do not have a false sense of security, but you have the confidence to carry yourself in a manner that will help you avoid dangerous situations. However, if that time does come, we want you to be able to defend yourself effectively. It is our challenge as instructors to ask slightly more than we know you can produce. We have the experience to do that and still keep you safe but motivated.
Our kids' classes begin with individual instruction on kata, or forms. These are predefined routines that help us build muscle memory and technique. As instructors, we strive to spend a few minutes one-on-one with each student each class. After kata work, we have a wide variety of activities from a workout of stretching and agilities to technique work, and of course our favorite, kumite or sparring.
We are a small, focused dojo, but we are well known in the Isshinryu community. Our primary instructors have over 175 years of experience. We would love to have you learn with us. Stop by any class time for a free trial.
